CHATTANOOGA, TN – Senior guard Detrek Browning scored a team-high 17 points, including a tie-breaking three-pointer with 1:13 remaining, to lead Francis Marion University to a shocking 68-63 win over Division I Chattanooga, Saturday evening (Nov. 4) in men's basketball exhibition action.
Francis Marion will open its regular season on Friday at the Peach Belt/South Atlantic Challenge in Pembroke, N.C. FMU will face Catawba College at 1 p.m.
Following Browning, junior swingman Brandon Parker scored 16 points, while senior forward Judah Alexander added 11 points. Both Parker and Alexander hauled down four rebounds.
Forward Makinde London led the Mocs with 17 points.
The Patriots led by as many as eight points in the opening half, and only trailed on one occasion by one point, before taking a 37-32 halftime advantage.
The Mocs gradually took the lead in the second stanza as FMU managed only 12 points over the first 13 minutes of the second stanza. Chattanooga held it largest lead at 59-53 with 4:43 left.
A layup by Alexander and a three-pointer by Parker brought Francis Marion to within 59-58. Following a Mocs' dunk, Parker tied the contest at 61-61 on a three-pointer with 2:44 on the clock. Neither team scored again until Browning's three-pointer with 1:13 put Francis Marion ahead for good at 64-61.
After a Chattanooga turnover, Alexander scored on a lay-in with 44 ticks left giving the Patriots a commanding 66-61 advantage and quieting the crowd of 2,129 in McKenzie Arena.FMU committed only seven turnovers while forcing 22 Chattanooga miscues.
